Warp Zones, Fast Travel, and Teleportation: Screw the Journey

Awesome!
I'm currently reading (very slowly) The Legend of Zelda And Philosophy and I'm having a very hard time getting through the first proper chapter because it is pissing me off. It is arguing that being able to skip the journey in video games is... degrading to the experience? It stops you from being able to appreciate the areas in between where you'd like to go and rips you out of the illusion of space that video games provide. I freaking love being able to fast travel (to borrow Oblivion's term) because I find going the long way in games to be extremely tedious. This also sort of applies to my life.
I really want to be able to teleport. My life centers far too much around my commute times. On a good day, when the world hasn't elected to make the roads practically impassable, my round-trip journey to work is almost an hour. My mother, younger sister, and nephew live a 23 hour drive away. Most annoyingly of all, my favorite person lives basically an hour from me. I've done all of these drives before. They aren't exciting. The journey to these places is not important to me. It's getting there. I've done that 23 hour drive in two days. I'm not at a point in my life where I can afford to appreciate the in-between, because my time isn't that valuable ($7.50 an hour pre-tax), I have to devote as much as possible to working and getting shit done.

That is why I want to be able to teleport. If I could, I wouldn't be facing the terrible fact that I have to traverse the probably still terrifying roads very shortly to get to my job. I would be able to pop down to Lincoln and kill zombies with Cameron whenever I damn well pleased. I could actually see my nephew grow up instead of being surprised at how much he's grown (and I've missed) every time I get to see him.

Of course I could see more of the world as well, which would be fabulous, but since teleportation is not a really feasible thing (at this point, hopefully it will be someday. The world because more science fiction-y every day!) I should probably stop worrying about it.
